An Illustrated Guide to the 5 Levels of Inception

July 20, 2010

This is an infographic I made for Cinema Blend detailing the 5 dream levels of Inception. CB Head Honcho Josh Tyler wrote the text while I came up with the visuals. I’ve blurred out the image below because it’s chock-full of spoilers and I’d hate to ruin the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. Inception is a great film and the less you know going in the more you’ll enjoy it.

You can click here to read the Cinema Blend article and see the infographic in all it’s spoilery glory.

This is a great infographic (it was linked to on metafilter).

Is Eames the dreamer in the snow level though? I thought it was Fisher’s dream? As they were getting Fisher to go inside his own mind (under the guise that they were going inside his Uncle’s mind). Or did I miss something?

  2. mattsinopoli Says:

Nope, Eames was the dreamer. Fischer populated the world with his subconscious but it was the world that was built by Ariadane and dreamed by Eames. If Fischer had been the dreamer they wouldn’t have been able to use the shortcut that was installed by Ariadane.

This is pretty cool. You should add the different dream state ‘timezones’. Like

Real time of 10 hours is:
    Level 1: 1 week
    Level 2: 6 months
    Level 3: 10 years
    Level 4: ∞

    …or whatever it is.

Hey, great work, but didn’t you forget a level, Cobb’s Dream as Level 5 ? The Limbo is not the “falling buildings” level where Cobb meets his wife again. The Limbo is where Cobb gets caught on the beach and meets old-Saito trapped inside.
This infography show it that way http://www.forevergeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Inception_Infographic_by_dehahs.jpg
Your “limbo” illustration is in fact “Cobb’s dream”, and there is another level, limbo, with the Giant chinese house by the ocean cliff.

Cobb and Saito shoot themselves? You must be a clairvoyant. WOW!

    • mattsinopoli Says:

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills because the blog entry says that I only did the graphics work.

That being said, you should also brush up on your movie viewing comprehension because it’s clearly implied that Saito shoots Cobb and then himself to escape limbo. Saito picks up the gun and then the next thing you see is Cobb waking up on the plane.

      • Maximilian Says:

You can suppose it but you can’t be sure.
The top keeps on spinning and so nobody knows if they are still in the limbo or not.

  6. mattsinopoli Says:

    @Maximilian:

Cobb and Saito escape the level of Limbo that has Saito’s sea-side fortress. We see them wake up on the plane. The purpose of the top spinning at the end was to make us wonder if the events that occurred in the supposed real world, like them being on the plane, were in fact reality or if Cobb is still in Limbo and that it was Mal who escaped by killing herself.
