Got my light!

August 10, 2008 by mattsinopoli

I really love food photography, but I’ve always had a hard time getting good lighting inside the house.  It was getting to the point where I would time my cooking with the weather so I could take the food and photograph it in the sunlight.  A friend recommended the Lowel Ego to me, and after a few weeks of putting it off, I finally ordered one last week.  It came Friday and it is awesome!

I made some oatmeal Saturday morning and took a few shots to test the light out.  I’m really happy with the way they turned out.  Here are a few shots to look at:

Remember you can check out all of my food photography and regular photography on my flickr page!

Bistro Italiano

Got to work on this menu the other day it work.  In the direct mail industry, we don’t get many chances to sit down with an ad and make it look good.  Time is usually the biggest priority.  That’s why it’s always nice to get a chance to really focus on making an ad look nice.  It also doesn’t hurt when the client gives you free (or mostly free) creative range.  This ad/menu was built entirely from scratch, with the clients only directions being to organize the menu in a certain order, and to put that horrible burst on the back.  I’m happy with the way it turned out.  I think it looks nice.

Cinema Blend Does Comic Con

July 25, 2008 by mattsinopoli

I recently got to work on some graphics for Cinema Blend for their coverage of Comic Con.  I had a lot of fun working on these and playing with a comic book style for the images.

You can check out all of the different graphics I made, as well as some fantastic Comic Con coverage, over at Cinema Blend.

Valassis Sample Work

June 8, 2008 by mattsinopoli

Thought I would share a couple jobs I’ve worked on recently at my work. Since I work in direct mail I don’t always get a chance to make really nice ads, but when I do I always jump at the chance. Here are two of my favorite ads I’ve worked on. Both of these were made completely from scratch although based off of ideas requested by the client.

Jr. High Memento Logo

December 23, 2007 by mattsinopoli

Since Cinema Blend’s logo & site redesign last month I’ve been doing a lot of work creating buttons and other graphics for the site. When I designed the logo my intention was to supply the site with an entire identity, so it was important to me to have a hand in most of the graphical support elements being made for the site so that everything would have a consistent feel.

I’ve been busy with a number of graphics for the site but I just wanted to highlight one that I really had a lot of fun working on, the Jr. High Memento logo. JHM is a feature for the music section that highlights older music videos, usually from the ’90s. I had a really fun time making the logo, especially playing with different color schemes from the early ’90s.

You can take a look at the logo below.  And as always, comments, critique and feedback are very welcome!:

Got A Job!

November 20, 2007 by mattsinopoli

A few weeks after graduation, and already I am lucky enough to find a job! Valassis, the company where I worked as an intern, was kind enough to offer me a full time job this week.

Valassis is the country’s number one source for direct mail advertising. They reach something like 95% of the nations homes every week with their RedPlum (formerly Shopwise) Wrap, a shared mail package full of coupons, ads and menus for local businesses. They are also the guys responsible for the RedPlum coupon insert found in many Sunday newspapers. In early 2008, Valassis also plans to unveil redplum.com, a website dedicated to bringing consumers the same coupons and savings in an electronic format.

I’m really excited to be returning to Valassis. The work environment is great, and they really seem headed in the right direction as a company. As a desktop artist, my duties will include editing and updating preexisting ads, creating entirely new ads for clients, and everything in between.

I start December 3rd, 2007. Wish me luck!

CB Logo and Site Updates

November 19, 2007 by mattsinopoli

It’s been a while since my last update, but I can finally show you guys the top secret project I’ve been working on for the past month and a half. The new revised layout and logo for Cinema Blend went live tonight and can be seen here. Site owner Josh Tyler and our web designer/coder Mike are still modifying and debugging stuff right now but it should probably be working right by morning. Anyways, I’m really happy with the way the site turned out. I didn’t have much to do with the design aspect as far as anything below the navigation goes so I’m really pleased to see how nicely everything came together. Excellent work guys!

I did have a lot to do with designing the logo and site identity, however, so that’s what I’ll be talking about. I love reading case studies for logos and seeing all the behind the scenes stuff that went in to the final logo so I thought I’d do something like that here.

A good logo always starts on paper. Usually this involves brainstorming ideas or drawing quick sketches down that you will refine later. I started the project off with a mind map. Josh wanted me to avoid a movie themed logo so I ignored the word cinema and went after the blend part.

The most interesting solutions I got from the mind map were the words steam, liquid and flowing. It was at this point that I decided to aim for a feeling of fluid, liquid like movement in the site’s identity.

This lead me first down the path of coffee mugs. The old logo was designed around the feeling of a coffee house and was intended to to look sort of similar to the Starbucks logo if I remember correctly. I figured this was the natural place to start although it quickly became clear that coffee mugs weren’t the solution to this problem.

I also originally did some movie themed ones that you can see on the same page as the first coffee thumbnail (don’t tell Josh).

In this next set of thumbnails you can also see my incredibly rudimentary sketch of the new navigation system.

My next step was to create digital thumbnails based on the first set of concept sketches. I presented Josh with some coffee mug logos, a bunch of corporate looking initial letter logos, and lastly a logo that incorporated a fairly literal solution: and actual blender. As you can see I utilized wavy, fluid shapes in all of the logos, trying to subconsciously suggest the idea of flowing liquid, something I planned on using as a cornerstone for the site’s identity.

Josh and I quickly agreed that the coffee ones weren’t working. The initial letter ones still looked a little corporate and plain, but the one thing that interested us both was the blender logo. We decided to try and balance out the initial letter logos as well as explore more options with the blender solution.

It was becoming clear by this point that the blenders were the strongest concepts. They had a fun style to them that mirrored the site’s own style of news coverage. We were both still hesitant to use the blender concept because it seemed like such an obvious solution. We had to exhaust all other options first. So I set to work on another stage of logos hoping to maybe resurrect the initial letter logos or to play off the idea of a blender in a more subtle way.

Here’s the next set of thumbnails that I worked on while on vacation.

These ideas used a much more abstracted interpretation of the word “blend”. When I got home from vacation I digitized the scribbled ideas into the following set thumbnails.

There were a few promising ideas there, but nothing that truly captured the fun, energetic style of the blender logos. It was decided at this point that we would pursue the blender concept for the final logo.

As I mentioned before I was interested in using the idea of flowing liquid as something that would give the whole site an identity, so when creating the final logo I repeated the wavy shape inside the blender in the background, behind the logo. We decided to incorporate this shape in the site’s graphics as well to give the whole site synergy. We also experimented with using different ghosted images behind the logo of each section of the site to reflect that section’s theme. For the movie section of Cinema Blend I experimented with both a film reel and a film strip.

The filmstrip was clearly the most awesome idea ever so we kept that for the movies section. The wavy pattern was reserved for the index page as well as more neutral pages like the site’s forums. After this was decided it was only a matter of modifying the logo for each different section of the site’s coverage. You can check those logos out over at cinemablend.com if you’re interested.

If you’ve stuck around this far thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope I’ve maybe helped you understand the work that goes into a logo or at least what my creative process is when I go about making one. Again thanks to Josh and Mike for all the hard work they’ve put in to the revisions as well. It looks fantastic, guys, and I’m proud to have been involved.

So what do you guys think of the final logo? Good, bad? What would you have done? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

Portfolio Show Update

October 10, 2007 by mattsinopoli

Alright. I thought I’d give you guys an update of how our portfolio show went. The show itself was really great and the best I’ve seen in my two years attending PTI. Everyone really did an excellent job on their work and displays and it really showed.

Here’s a picture of me chillin’ at the show with my friend/ classmate Jake:

Me chillin at the show with friend/ classmate Jake

For myself the show went very, very well. I was lucky enough to take home one of the Best In Show awards (second place, first place in my graduating class) for my educational campaign about dinosaurs. You can check out the campaign here.

Here’s another picture of me at my table. You can see the dinosaur project behind me:

I’m really happy to have won. There were tons of really fantastic pieces submitted and it’s a shame everyone couldn’t have gotten an award. Anyways the show was tons of fun and it was really nice to finally show off my work after two years of hard work. And before we part, here’s a bonus picture of Kayla looking pretty in front of her equally pretty looking display.

Alright See you guys later

Weekly Blend Audio Show- 100th Episode Logo

September 29, 2007 by mattsinopoli

Check out the new logo I made for the Weekly Blend Audio Show. Cinema Blend editor-in-chief Josh Tylor and I decided to redo the logo for the site’s podcast to commemorate the 100th episode of the show. The new logo was supposed to be a surprise for hosts Margaret and Rafe so it was pretty fun to work on it while they were kept in the dark. I had been wanting to redo the logo for a while now since the older logo I made wasn’t really a logo as much as an illustration based on one of Rafe’s vacation photos. Looking back, it’s weird how that shark from the photo inadvertently evolved into the podcast’s mascot, as well as the punch line to one of my more successful Blenders strips.

If you’re interested, you can take a look at the original logo. Or if you just want to see the new one, head on over to my site. You’ll have to use the link from here, though, because this is one of those blog exclusive things. My portfolio page is getting pretty crowded over there, so I doubt I’ll be uploading any new stuff to the site any time soon. Until then you can still keep checking back here where I’ll always keep you up to date on any new stuff I’m working on.
